I could have been just another individual in the diamond industry, but my heritage, coupled with the support of my family and partners, skills of our team, sound advice from a group of friends and camaraderie with industry peers elevated me to this position.
The award had been given to his father, Arunkumar Mehta, in 2007 — a detail noted from the stage on the night.

A house, a trade, and the distance between them
Why the work has never been only about stones.
Rosy Blue began in 1960 as B. Arunkumar & Co., founded in Mumbai by Arunkumar Mehta with his uncle Bhanuchandra Bhansali. By the 1970s the house had established itself in Antwerp, and it has since become one of the largest diamond and gemstone businesses in the world, with interests that now extend well beyond stones — into retail, media, real estate, financial services and clean energy.
Russell Mehta belongs to the third generation of the Mehta and Bhansali families to run it. He read commerce at the University of Mumbai, graduating from Sydenham College, and took his diamond training at the Gemological Institute of America. What he inherited was a family business; what he built was a professionally managed company.
The second half of the work has been institutional. A trade that moves goods across borders on trust needs bodies that can speak for it and standards it can be held to — and Mehta has served in several of them, in India and internationally.
